The age of the next-gen gaming consoles has begun, with the launch of the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3. While we still have to wait for the PS3 launch here in Europe, the battle between the three consoles is already in full motion in the US and Japan. The Xbox 360 is selling well in the US, but is performing weak in Japan. However, game developers do support the Xbox 360, with more and more quality games coming to the Xbox 360.
The Wii and PS3 have been launched in the US and Japan and according to the first sales figures, they are both performing well. In other words: there are still shortages, especially Wii shortages, and (almost) all Wii’s and PS3’s are sold out immediately. In real life this means more Wii’s are sold, since more Wii’s are available.
We’ve been discussing the next-gen console war many, many times over here. Most of the time the discussions were intense, but fortunately with sufficient thought and reasoning behind them.
After all these discussions, I thought it would be interesting to have another take on the next-gen console battle between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, but now from a completely different perspective. Astrologer and my collegue Elizabeth Hathway from astrologie.blogo has made an astrological analysis based on the horoscopes of Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. Find out below what the planets are saying about the chances for succes for the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3!

Sony is a strong company. It’s sun in Taurus in sextile with Saturn reflects a culture where hard work is inherent to its success: strong work ethic. Sony makes durable products. The PlayStation is in fact a little black box – and this is a very Saturnal earthy image. The product is sturdy – designed to last. This might be one of the reasons why the playstation has been so successful – it’s not easy for young kids to break. Sony’s weakness is probably that it is not inclined to “change a winning team”. This is it’s Achilles’ heel. At the top – there will be a conservative culture.
On the other hand, Sony’s Venus/Uranus conjunction in Gemini – shows how innovative the company can be when it comes to its products. Genial is some respects. It can be creative and at the same time innovative. It is quite inspiring. Sony – set up shortly after the end of the Second World War, has enormous strengths. With regard to the launch of PlayStation 3, as an astrologer, I would have suggested they wait until Jupiter was in Sagittarius. However, the European launch takes advantage of the Jupiter ingress into Sagittarius, so it could be that European sales are higher in the period following the launch than they were in the US and Japan.
Both Nintendo and Sony have a t-square in their horoscopes. These are powerful players. There is a lot of internal tension, but out of this tension comes growth and the need to take on new challenges.
Nintendo is intelligent, good in positioning itself on the market, and it makes attractive products. There is a lot of attention given to the form (Venus in Libra). It is an enormously competitive company, and will attract a certain sort of gamer, the more intellectual types and people who find the “look” and feel of the product at least as important as what it does. Nintendo is a company that wants to lead the parade in a unique way. Apple is a similar sort of company.
Then the Nintendo Wii. This launch horoscope once again shows- in this case a particularly strong Scorpio theme. This is interesting, because Scorpio is a fixed sign and the Nintendo Wii is an active product. Gamers are used to sitting down to play, with the Wii, you have to get out of your chair. Will hard-core gamers change their behaviour? Sorry, but this horoscope does not fit the product. It is difficult to imagine that Nintendo will have a quick success story with the Wii. Also Nintendo’s birth chart shows that the company has its progressed Sun in square with its radix Saturn. This suggests that in general, the company will have to work hard – very hard – to book results.
This could be a good year for Microsoft. Jupiter’s entry into Sagittarius heralds a year in which Jupiter will transit Microsoft’s radix Sun and Mars. This shows expansion, activity, and optimism. Sagittarius is good at adjusting to new circumstances and will aim for big, bigger, biggest!
In July 2006 Microsoft had its Saturn return. It is possible that during the summer, Microsoft re-defined its aims and strategy. “Where do we want to be thirty years from now?” It is a major transit. Possible changes at the top, definitely a sense of “coming of age”.
The Saturn/Uranus opposition (end 2008) will contact Microsoft’s radix Mercurius. Some aspect of the company will have to change at this time. Mercury – marketing? Possibly. In any case rapid change – growth that is possibly forced by having one’s back against the wall. It could point to a strong opponent. However on the more positive side, it could point to new innovation – i.e. a new product.
There is a strong synastry between the Microsoft horoscope and the launch horoscope for the Xbox 360 on 22 November 2005. A strong Sagittarius link is shown with both launch and radix Suns in this sign. Sagittarians think big and like to take a gamble. Play and gaming is certainly something for the fire signs. The links between the charts include: Venus conjunct Venus; Mercury conjunct Sun; Jupiter conjunct Uranus. In the long run – this will surely prove to be a good, successful product. It aptly reflects the company. However, Mercury in the launch horoscope is retrograde – YUK – not so good. Success will come slowly – Microsoft needs to take a long breath. It will take them some time to establish the Xbox 360. People need to connect with the product first. But it will come for sure.
As things stand at present, I personally feel that Sony has the lead. However – the need for a narrative – where there has to be a winner – sits uncomfortably on my shoulders. In the long term – all three companies are offering something different. I feel that there is room in the market for all three. However, I personally think, that the weakest horoscope, i.e. the horoscope that sits most uncomfortably with the product, is the Nintendo Wii.

Stars my @$#!%$, why don’t you use your freakin talent on Hogwart instead, I bet Harry needs you on one of his great adventure.
Facts are, Nintendo is taking over the market, and Sony has no choice but to join it like SEGA, if you even know what that is…
